Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from her grandmother Denise. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion for theater and art throughout the day. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used to engage people. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of art. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for television journalism. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the garbage belonging to one of juries. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
